Single story house designs and plans
Single story houses lack the vertical dimension and thus often thought to be less flamboyant or exciting than their two story cousins.
It need not be so. Architects sometimes speak of visual ambiguity, a somewhat elusive quality that breaks the predicable nature of a house and gives it a sense of intrigue and excitement that makes it come alive.
Changes in floor levels, angled walls, courtyards that puncture the house and concealed lighting that makes surfaces glow at night may be used to add vibrancy to a house. When complimented by raking ceilings, clerestory windows and folding walls that add light and apparent space, so with the passing of day and changing seasons an atmosphere is maintained that always seems refreshed.
Homeliness must never be forgotten. A coddeling quality that gives feelings of belonging, security, comfort, warmth and respect is so important. Usually reserved for bedrooms, it may also be the compliment of a well designed home cinema which, with the projector "off" is a place to rest, read, contemplate, meditate or practice yoga.
These are the qualities foremost in our minds when we prepare a new plan.
House plan designations codify their type as follows.
Single story houses have one letter followed by a number. (EG; D 5)
Two storey houses have two letters followed by a number. EG: CA6.
The second letter is always A or C or L where the upper floor is given to Adults, Children or Living spaces
